The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has now announced that it will pay a basic sustenance allowance to the daily wage labourers till the corona virus threat is there. The move is aimed at protecting the health of daily wage labourers who are most vulnerable to contracting the virus if the community transmission of corona virus begins.
The UP government has asked the daily wage labourers not to go to crowded places to look for work . This pathbreaking decision could be a new lease of life for millions of daily wage labourers who have to sit around street corners, pretty much every day, looking for work. They fall at the bottom of the economic pyramid and irrespective of their caste or religion, are the first ones to bear the brunt of all pressing emergencies, be it air pollution, climate change or now corona virus. In absence of any social security cover, they cannot conveniently sit back even at this critical juncture when educational institutions and even many workplaces have been shut down till March 31st. The decision by the Yogi Adityanath government is indeed a commendable one, that should be replicated by other state governments as well.
The left liberal media including the English language newspapers of India who always try to portray the Yogi Adityanath government in a negative light with regard to his tough decisions on communal riots haven’t quite reported that extensively on this significant decision of his government.
A committee under the finance minister, consisting of the agriculture and labour ministers, has been constituted to submit a report within 3 days oon how daily wage labourers can be best compensated for the loss of work they will have to suffer by not going out and risking infection. The money shall be directly transferred to their bank accounts through RTGS.
The state of Uttar Pradesh will also provide free testing and treatment to all corona virus patients. No pay cuts would be allowed during the period of illness and recuperation.
CM Yogi is setting up a benchmark for all other state CM’s, great going.
