We have been seeing huge protests against the farm laws that were passed in the Parliament giving freedom to the farmers to sell their products anywhere they wished.
Sadly, the protests culminated in the infamous violence at the Red Fort on the Republic Day celebrations in Delhi.
However, it is noteworthy that the petrol and diesel price hike, which affects every chain of the society, directly or indirectly, has not angered the masses as yet. Why is it so? What are the reasons?
Most of us, I believe, would have received a Whatsapp message, that had gone viral on social media.
It mentioned that an individual spends Rs 2850 per month on petrol costing Rs 95 per litre. Earlier, he used to spend Rs 2400 per month on fuel costing Rs 80 per litre. So, the individual is spending Rs 450 more per month for now. And, it is not a good idea to change the prime minister for a minor Rs 450 hike.
The person ends the message summing up in these words by drawing parallels between Modi and Rahul Gandhi: “To raise a lion is a costlier affair, but it does not mean that we should sell the lion to buy a donkey.”
This remark shows the general sentiments of the people that they are with Modi and that they haven’t voted him to power to control petrol prices. The mandate, in fact, was given to him to bring a massive political change and provide clean governance.
Another reason why there is no outrage on the fuel hike is that the people have zero trusts in the opposition leaders whose fight against the Modi government is based on fake and anti-India narratives.
People also understand the crores of rupees that Modi distributed to the farmers and the poor during the Covid pandemic, would prompt his government to increase petrol taxes.
In fact, petrol is the biggest revenue generator for state and central governments. As much as 56 per cent of the central government’s revenues come from taxes on fuel products.
The next best revenues come from tobacco products. That is 8.8 per cent. So, there is a huge gap between the two products in terms of revenues. Therefore, the petrol price plays a very important role in Indian politics.
Arguing in terms of economy, high fuel prices do not directly hit the poorest people. They hit the middle class. But the indirect impact of high fuel prices on overall inflation will eventually hit the poor. But, the Modi government seems to have controlled the inflation adequately.
