George Floyd, an African-American, was reportedly killed by a Minneapolis white police officer Derek Chauvin who knelt on the former’s neck for 7-long minutes until his body became unresponsive.
Following his death, widespread violence broke out in America with rioters smashing and torching public and private properties. They also defiled the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, who fought for the Blacks rights during his stay in South Africa.
In India, the usual suspects, a few left-leaning celebrities voiced their solidarity and put up social media campaign with a hashtag #BlackLivesMatter on Twitter.
Priyanka Chopra shared a lengthy caption last week urging people to end the ‘race war’ following Floyd’s death. Others, Deepika Padukone, Disha Patani and Sonam Kapoor, also chipped in with their voices.
However, they were slammed for their hypocrisy to support “BlackLivesMatter” movement.
Exposing the selectivity and hypocrisy of Bollywood star, actress Kangana Ranaut, in an interview with BBC, slammed them for speaking on the movement, while staying silent on incidents such as Palghar Sadhus lynching.
The actress said Sadhus were precisely killed for wearing saffron clothes.
She also said the celebrities were just advertising themselves to promote their personal interests. “How dare they endorse fairness products and say Black Lives Matter shamelessly. I am the only actor with an exception for not endorsing fairness products,” she said.
She also questioned their million dollar deals and accused them of commercializing dissent.
The actress wondered how the stars showing solidarity with the Blacks in US could contribute to socio-political reform of America. Before going out to reform the world, it is better for them to deal the evil within the country, she added.
Even actors like Abhay Deol also protested the hypocrisy of left-leaning celebrities.
