The Rona Ayubs, the Arfa Khanums and other jihadi patrakars, are exasperated.
They are frustrated over the inaction of the Arab nations to act against Israel for carrying out deadly air strikes on the Gaza Strip.
The Isarelis had launched airstrikes in response to rocket strikes carried out by Hamas, an international terrorist organisation.
The clashes between the two nations erupted following Israeli police attack on worshippers who had gathered at Al-Aqsa Mosque to protest against eviction of Palestanian families from Jerusalem.
Instead of taking concrete action against Israel, the Arab League has only condemned the deadly air strikes, which has disappointed Rona Ayubs and Arfa Khanums.
Why have the Arab nations not breathed fire yet? Rest assured, these jihadi patrakars would be startled to know the truth.
This is nothing but due to Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Israel in 2017.
This visit also was a game-changer because the Arab nations found in Modi a leader who could act as an intermediary to improve their relationship with the Jewish state.
Prior to Modi’s visit, countries like Saudi Arabia and Bahrain had made behind-the-scenes contact with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s government.
The frequency grew further when US and other major powers signed a nuclear treaty with Iran in January 2016.
Arab nations consider Shia-ruled Iran an existential threat to their Sunni-dominated regimes, and finds common cause with Israel, which hurls invectives against the theocracy in Tehran.
The Saudis are horrified that Iran will stir up trouble in its oil-rich eastern province (Bahrain), just as it did by encouraging Houthi militia that controls much of Yemen.
The Sunni Arabs had banked on the US support to neutralise the Iranian threat, but Joe Biden administration’s plans to unfreeze $1 billion to Iran, have left them scrambling for succor elsewhere.
Russia is expanding ties with Iran to counter growing Turkish influence around Caspian region. It has expanded its naval activities in the region to signal that it remains a force to be reckoned with there.
China has signed a 25-year comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement with Iran. That leaves Israel, which is not only hostile to Iran, but has its own arsenal of nuclear weapons to tame the mullahs in Tehran.
However, the Arab nations have no formal relations with Israel. Therefore, they require the services of an intermediary to exchange warm notes between them. Who could be a better intermediary than Modi, who is a good friend of Netanyahu and the Arabs.
Therefore, the Arab nations have only condemned the Israeli air strikes in Gaza Strip, because they need the Netanyahu government to counter Iran, which is an existential threat to Sunni-dominated regimes.
After reading this, the Rona Ayubs and Arfa Khanums may get pissed, not with the geopolitical shift taking place, but with the role of Modi, who could succeed in improving Israel-Arab ties.
